In a speech at the Armenian Community Centre in Toronto, Liberal Leader Bob Rae decried the Conservative budget for its failure to make real investments in job creation, and for short-changing baby-boomers and seniors.
“This latest budget clearly illustrates that there is an ideology of small-minded austerity ruling over Mr. Harper’s Conservatives,” said Mr. Rae. “Choosing jails and jets over baby boomers, this government is denying Canadians under 54 two years of benefits they have earned, all while neglecting investment in Canadian businesses and job creation.”
“While Conservatives play shell games with a jobless budget, Liberals remain focused on the real priorities of Canadians: security for our seniors, opportunity for our youth and shared prosperity for all Canadians,” Mr. Rae went on to say.
At the media scrum immediately after, Mr. Rae also made the following comments in response to Salam Toronto’s question on the announcement that came with the budget to eliminate the immigration backlog by returning almost 300,000 applications:
“I think what Minister Kenney is doing is a classic example of choking. You can very quickly get rid of a waiting list and say [look] there’s no body on the list. He’s doing that. He’s [also] punishing the refugees, a terrible change to the law which will never pass the Supreme Court of Canada. Not a chance! And he’s dramatically reducing the access that family members have for coming to Canada.”
