Jason Kenney criticized for sending mass email

A mass email titled “LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) Refugees in Iran” sent by Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney’s office to thousands of recipients has raised questions over privacy.

According to a report by the Ottawa Citizen, a Ministry spokesperson said the email was sent to “individuals who have communicated with our office about gay refugee issues.”

The Citizen also reported that “Toronto community organizer and former NDP candidate Michael Erickson posted a petition on the website change.org”, and that “whenever someone ‘signed’ the petition, the site automatically sent a form letter by email to Kenney’s office with the signatory’s reply email address.”

The CBC published the email – which promoted how the Conservative government’s has supported protecting gay and lesbian refugees around the world – on its website.
