Ontario students rank among highest in reading, science and math

Results of a nation-wide survey shows Ontario’s grade 8 students are ranked among the highest in reading and second in science and math.

According to the Pan-Canadian Assessment Program’s (PCAP) 2013 report, Ontario was the only province that scored at or above the Canadian average in all three subjects with Ontario’s results in reading the highest of all provinces by a significant margin.

The Pan-Canadian Assessment Program is a survey of the knowledge and skills of Canadian students in Grade 8 (Secondary II in Quebec) in science, mathematics and reading.

The Council of Ministers of Education, Canada administered the assessment to a random sampling of about 32,000 Grade 8 students from all 10 provinces.

The OECD’s Programme for International Student Assessment ranked Ontario students among the top readers in the world.

According to the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) results, 72 per cent of Ontario’s grade 3 and 6 students met or exceeded the provincial standard in reading, writing and math in 2014 – an 18 percentage point increase since 2003.
